The Taj Mahal

To arrive early was our plan. We could see the Taj Mahal from the rooftop of the hostel - we’d chosen the nearest so that we’d have little distance to travel in the morning. Admiring the marble under the late afternoon sun, we ate, then set our alarm, knowing it’d be cold before dawn. The warming smell of the morning chai, thick with cinnamon and cloves wove its magic, and we were up, dressed, and in a tuk-tuk. Soon we were at the gates, and almost first in line. Waving off the young tour guides, we quickly crossed the gardens and made the most of our time at the tomb, soaking up the early morning sunrise while we walked the marble tiles running alongside the Yamuna. By the time we had circled the dome, the crowds were already becoming thick, but those early moments will last in the memory forever.
